Even if you’re not a “techie” or an early adopter, you likely have heard of AI. Short for Artificial Intelligence, AI is the science of making machines that can think and behave in ways that imitate humans.

What is AI?
AI, short for Artificial Intelligence, has quickly become a common word or phrase in our daily vocabulary. But what is AI and how is it being used? Simply put, AI is the science of computer systems that can think and behave in ways that imitate humans. These systems, much like humans, learn information over time and adapt to more readily process information and share results.
AI technology can process large amounts of data much faster than people. For example, computers can recognize patterns to make decisions in a matter of minutes compared to the hours it could take humans.
If you are new to using and understanding AI, there are many commonplace tools, and a quick internet search offers plenty of resources for how to use them. Some of the more popular AI tools include ChatGPT®, Microsoft Copilot, and OpenAI®.
Types of AI
Three primary types of AI exist in today’s technology-filled world. They include Narrow or Weak AI, General or Strong AI, and Super AI or Artificial Superintelligence. Narrow AI performs a single task such as voice recognition. You may not realize it but when you call out to “Siri®”, “Alexa®,” or voice commands into your tv remote, you are using AI. Programmers write code using algorithms to instruct these types of AI systems to execute that one task—make a call, send a text, play music, and change the channel.
General AI systems can solve more complex problems and can learn and adapt to behaviors—even those beyond what a programmer has designed it to do. Some websites utilize chatbots to provide instant assistance to those browsing pages online. These chatbots analyze what humans type or ask and create a subsequent response. Waymo®, a brand of autonomous vehicles, is a more extraordinary example of general AI.
If you think that self-driving cars reach the limits of AI, think again. While Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) is still in a hypothetical state it promises to support an intellectual scope beyond human intelligence via cutting-edge cognitive functions and developed thinking skills. The advancement of this technology hinges on its ability to replicate or surpass the intricate workings of the human brain, which is very complex, creative and cerebral.
Proceed with Caution
Many people are already using AI in their day-to-day lives, sometimes without even realizing it. Some larger businesses have employed AI to answer client questions immediately, in a chat as an example, to enhance customer experience without human intervention or to generate content for marketing purposes. You may even use AI at home when you search for vacation ideas or new recipes.
Be aware that AI and the use of new software also can open the door to possible data breaches and cyberattacks. These unfortunate events can result in the loss or theft of personal information. Hamilton Backup and Anti-Virus can be installed on your devices at home to help you protect your information and memories.
Don’t shy away from AI because it seems too intimidating. Although it can be overwhelming, you can make progress by educating yourself and covering your bases. AI has the potential to be extremely helpful in your daily life if you use it safely and securely.
